See You in the Morning

He wasn’t ours to keep. He never was.

His smile was too bright. His laughter too loud. His personality too big.

Even for a four-year-old.

Each night we would tuck him in. Each night we would pray. Each night we would hug him and kiss him.

Each night he would whisper to us in the darkness, “See you in the morning.”
